Each month, GWCCA celebrates an employee and/or partner who has made strives to live a healthier lifestyle.  Who is your Healthy Hero?  Contact a Wellness Team member and let us know.

Our inaugural Healthy Hero is Jim Ridgway, Director of Events Services.  Jim has lost 50 pounds and quit smoking.  When Jim turned 50 he decided that he did not want to fall victim to any preventable diseases and that it was time to make a change.  He then committed to a lifestyle change that included a sensible diet, an increase in water intake and an increase in his physical activity.  The Wellness Team asked Jim some questions about his journey:

Q. Jim, tell us the results of your lifestyle change. 

A. I lost 50 lbs which is a 20% reduction in weight.  I quit smoking.

Q. How does that make you feel?

A. I feel better. I sleep better. I no longer have heartburn. I think I look younger.

Q. What were some of your stumbling blocks?

A. Holidays were tough; however, I didn’t punish myself or get depressed after a bad weekend.  Once I started seeing the success, it kept me motivated.

Q. What would you say to others looking to change their lifestyle?

A. Be committed.  Want to do it for yourself.  Pleasing your spouse and kids is good, but you have to be personally committed.  The hardest thing to do is start. The second hardest thing to do is stick with it.

Q. What tools did you use to help you?

A. I used the MyFitnessPal app religiously.  It allowed me to track everything I ate, drank and every activity I completed each day.  The app kept me regimented and thinking of everything I put in my body.
