Georgia Historical Society marker at C.O.P. commemorates ’96 Games
On Tuesday, Nov. 1, the Georgia Historical Society hosted a marker dedication ceremony for a commemorative plaque at Centennial Olympic Park honoring the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Among those in attendance were: Georgia World Congress Center Authority Executive Director Frank Poe, Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games CEO Billy Payne, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, and Ambassador Andrew Young.
Young remarked on the transformation of downtown Atlanta, from abandoned warehouses to a complex mixed-used center of arts, entertainment, and commerce.
The new marker is one of many changes happening in the South Park area as plans call for decommissioning the current Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce building, which the Authority purchased.
As our facilities continue to grow and change, much like the city itself, it is important to take time to remember the impact and legacy we have helped shaped.
