High school football playoffs: The end of an era
In the February edition of the Georgia High School Association’s newsletter, the organization’s Executive Director reflected fondly upon the state’s high school football playoffs’ tenure at the Georgia Dome.
Here is an excerpt:
On December 10, 2016, the last high school football game ended the Georgia High School Association run in the Georgia Dome with the Class 7A championship – our newest classification. Other levels of football – college and professional – kept the games going in the Dome until the Atlanta Falcons “closed the football doors” on Sunday, January 22, 2017, by winning the NFC Championship.
The Georgia High School Association experienced record crowds at our football finals and we celebrated the past champions with special football presentations at halftimes and between games.
In the end, we were saddened to be leaving such a fine site for our championships. We commend the Georgia Dome leadership and their entire staff. They have been great hosts over the many years the Georgia High School Association has played there. Many fond memories for thousands of high school athletes and fans were created in the Dome. What a great job by everyone there!
– Gary Phillips, Executive Director
